Dollar's Trades With a Relatively Firm Tone as Moody's and Fitch Affirm U.S. Top Rating

The greenback recovered from record low against the Swiss franc and traded with a relative firm undertone as rating agencies Moody’s and Fitch both affirmed their AAA credit ratings U.S., however, Moody’s Investors Service warned that downgrades were still possible if lawmakers fail to form effective debt reduction measures. After U.S. President Obama signed the bill to lift the country’s debt ceiling and cut spending cut, Moody’s published a statement and indicated that the outlook for the U.S. grade is now negative which signaled it is still possible for a downgrade in the next 12-18 months.

RBA Stands Aside Despite Concerns About Inflation

The RBA left the cash rate unchanged at 4.75%. While this was the consensus forecast, a handful of analysts had anticipated a rate hike while some expected a cut. The split reflected the uncertainty in Australia's economy which is facing both the risk of slowdown and the threat of higher inflation. Apart from domestic economic developments, the central bank's decision was also affected by debt problems in the US and Eurozone. While policymakers in both sides of the Atlantic have agreed on measures that helped alleviate near-term concerns, long-term plans are still unavailable to solve the core problems – to lower deficits.

ECB To Stand Aside In August But Will Continue To 'Monitor' Price Stability 'Very Closely'

As economic and sentiment data released since the last meeting have weakened, the ECB will put more focus on the downside risk in economic growth in the August meeting. Therefore, we believe the central bank will keep the main refinancing rate at 1.5% and non-standard measures unchanged. In the accompanying statement, the ECB will reiterate that it will 'monitor very closely' on the upside risks to price stability but should not signal any rate hike in the next meeting.

Trade Idea Update: GBP/USD – Sell at 1.6365

Despite intra-day brief breach of 1.6238, lack of follow through selling and current rebound from 1.6224 suggest consolidation above this level would take place and retracement to 1.6300 and possibly intra-day high of 1.6329 cannot be ruled out, however, reckon the Ichimoku cloud bottom (now at 1.6368) would limit upside and bring another decline later. A break of said support would extend decline from yesterday’s high of 1.6477 for a stronger retracement of recent upmove to 1.6195-00

Trade Idea: USD/CAD – Sell at 0.9635

Although the greenback has continued to edge higher and the corrective rise from 0.9407 (formed last week) may bring a stronger retracement of recent decline to 0.9635-38 (previous resistance and 61.8% Fibonacci retracement of 0.9780 to 0.9407), reckon renewed selling interest would emerge there and bring another decline later. A break of yesterday’s low at 0.9492 would suggest the rebound from 0.9407 has possibly ended and bring test of 0.9458

USD/CHF Drops to Another record Low

USD/CHF Drops to Another record Low on Risk of U.S. Downgrade Whilst GBP/USD Tumbles as Manufacturing PMI Falls Below 50

Despite staging a brief rebound from record low against the Swiss franc earlier today, the greenback ran into heavy selling pressure and tumbled again to another record low on renewed worries that rating agencies may downgrade U.S. top credit rating even the bill is passed in Congress. Whilst the vote is counting in congress for the bill to pass for a US$2.4 trillion deficit cut in 10 years plus raising the debt ceiling, investors are starting to doubt that this bill may not be enough to avoid a possible downgrade of the nation's AAA credit rating. Fresh round of safe-haven flows and thin market conditions (U.S. investment banks and real money accounts were seen buying Swiss franc) pushed the Swiss franc sharply higher to another historical peak against the greenback and option barriers at 0.7800 and 0.7780 are in focus with next triggers seen at 0.7720 and 0.7700. On the upside, offers are lined up from 0.7850 up to 0.7900 with more selling interest tipped at 0.7950 (stops above 0.7960).

RBA To Leaves Cash Rate At 4.75% After Balancing Growth And Inflation Risks

The less-than-expected moderation in 2Q11 inflation in Australia reduced bets that the RBA will cut interest rates in coming months. It also triggered some analysts to forecast the central bank will adopt a rate hike as soon as in August. In our opinion, the central bank will pause for another month, leaving the cash rate at 4.75% as domestic economy is facing the risk of slowdown while debt problems in the US and Eurozone remain unresolved.

Action Insight Market Overview Markets Snapshot

Dolllar Falls Versus Other Major Currenecies on Weaker-than-Expected U.S. Q2 GDP

The greenback tumbled across the board after the release of weaker-than-expected U.S. GDP data which showed U.S. economy grew at a slower pace of 1.3% in Q2 versus forecast of 1.7% and previous quarter number was also largely revised downward from 1.9% to only 0.4%. Swiss franc surged sharply to another record high of 0.7876 (cleared stops at 0.7990 and option barriers at 0.7950 and 0.7900 without much resistance). Safe-haven demand continued to support the Swiss franc as both U.S. and eurozone are facing their own debt problem, the movements in Swissy has been pretty much one-sided, no bids are reported on the way down and more option barriers are tipped at 0.7850 and further out at 0.7800 with offers lined up from as low as 0.7900 up to 0.7900 and mixture of offers and stops is seen at 0.7990-0.8000.

Intraday bias is now mildly on the upside for further rise to near term falling trend line (now at 0.9625). On the downside, below 0.9497 minor support will flip bias back to the downside for retesting 0.9406 first. Swiss Franc Surges on Poor US GDP and Spain, USD/CHF, EUR/CHF, GBP/CHF at New Record Lows

The Swiss franc jumps to new record high against Dollar, Euro and Sterling today as risk aversion dominates the markets. Q GDP data from US was shockingly poor. Real GDP grew at 1.3% annualized pace in Q2, substantially below market expectation of 1.7%. Prior quarters figure was also revised down from 1.9% to a very poor 0.4%. While GDP has now increased for eight straight quarters, the poor growth rate suggests that the US economy is still finding much difficulty in gathering sustainable momentum for recovery. Data from Canada was also poor, with GDP showing -0.3% mom contraction in May versus expectation of 0.1% mom.

Trade Idea Update: GBP/USD – Target met and buy again at 1.6300

Despite intra-day brief fall to 1.6261, lack of follow through selling on break of previous support at 1.6262 and current anticipated rebound suggest the fall from 1.6440 has possibly ended at 1.6261 and consolidation with mild upside bias remains for a test of resistance at 1.6383, break there would add credence to this view and extend gain to 1.6400, then retest of recent high of 1.6440.
